PP Electrical Systems goes back to school

Members of staff from PP Electrical Systems went back to school last week in an attempt to inspire the next generation of manufacturing professionals.

More than 200 Great Wyrley pupils from Years 9, 10, 11 and the school’s Sixth Form were given an insight into working at the automation and control systems specialist and the type of careers available to them.

They heard about working on the latest automation, world class lean manufacturing techniques and how the company invests in 200 hours of training for each member of staff.

There was also an opportunity to talk about PP Electrical’s global customer base, which includes clients involved in Formula 1, mobile technology, food production and state-of-the-art printing.

Ian Knight, Director of Operational Excellence, commented: “UK manufacturing is enjoying a major period of growth and our biggest challenge now is to find the workers we need to sustain this expansion.

“It is vital that we get more young people involved in the sector and the best way of doing that is showcasing what we do, how we do it and the opportunities they can enjoy.”

He continued: “The pupils got to ask loads of questions about what skills they will need and the type of courses they will need to take. We look forward to attending the next careers event.”

PP Electrical Systems currently employs five apprentices across the shopfloor, sales and offices.

Artificial intelligence is no longer a distant concept for manufacturers. It is already being explored across quotation, production planning, engineering, quality, supply chain and customer service functions. On paper, defined discipline-specific suppliers can look organised. However, every additional supplier introduces another handoff, and every handoff creates another point where time, quality, communication and accountability can be lost.

Very rarely does growth not surface because an OEM lacks ambition. Shortcomings arise because operating models built to support such ambition don’t evolve quickly enough.
